Car Replacement

The MPI Loss of Use Program is part of the Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) claims system. It provides coverage for transportation costs when your insured vehicle is not usable due to a claim — for example, if it’s being repaired or written off after a collision. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

🚗 What is “Loss of Use”?

“Loss of Use” means you’re temporarily without your vehicle due to a covered claim, and you need a replacement mode of transportation.

Who is Eligible?

You’re eligible for Loss of Use coverage if:

• You have an Autopac policy with Loss of Use coverage added (it’s optional, not included by default).

• Your vehicle is involved in a covered claim (e.g., collision, vandalism, theft, etc.).

• Your vehicle is not drivable or is in the shop for repairs due to the claim.

🔍 How It Works

1. You make a claim with MPI.

2. Your adjuster determines whether Loss of Use coverage applies.

3. If eligible, MPI:

Authorizes a rental vehicle, or

• Reimburses you for alternative transportation (e.g., taxis, transit, rideshare).

🚕 What Does It Cover?

• Rental car fees (from MPI-approved providers).

• Transit fares, taxi, or ride-sharing (only if a rental car is not practical or available).

Up to a daily and total limit, depending on the level of Loss of Use coverage you purchased.

When Does It Start and Stop?

• Starts: Usually when repairs begin or vehicle is confirmed not drivable.

• Ends: When your vehicle is:

• Repaired and ready for pickup,

• Replaced (if written off),

• Or when the max benefit is reached.

⚠️ Key Notes

You must purchase Loss of Use coverage in advance; you can’t add it after the claim.

Not all claims are eligible — for example, if you’re at fault in a collision and don’t have coverage, you won’t get Loss of Use benefits.

• You must use a rental agency approved by MPI (if choosing that option)
